Maximum Progress is a blog on economics, mathematics, philosophy, and progress.

My name is Maxwell Tabarrok, and I am a Math and Economics graduate from the University of Virginia. I use this blog to post my research and writing in the field of Progress Studies. This is a multi-disciplinary combination of economics, history, philosophy, and science. It is motivated by two observations. First is what Deirdre McCloskey calls “The Great Enrichment”, a massive increase in material living standards over the past 200 years. Second is Tyler Cowen’s “Great Stagnation”, a slowing down of the technological and economic progress since the 1970s. The importance of technological progress to human well-being so far, and its seeming fragility motivate a group of scholars to study progress so that we might learn how to protect and accelerate it into the future.
